What is a repair and repair services?
If an instrument fails to meet its specified performance, and cannot be successfully adjusted, this constitutes a repair, leading to a repair investigation to identify the causes of failure. We provide full repair services on all instrumentation within our calibration capabilities.
When will a repair be required?
During calibration some instruments will fail to meet the manufacturer's specification. Of these, most will only require an adjustment, and this we carry out free of charge as part of our Service, however those that aren't able to be adjusted into specification will require repair investigation.
There are typically 3 reasons for failure:
- General wear and tear/component ageing.
- Accidental damage.
- Misuse.
Why carry out a repair?
There are 2 main reasons for a repair being the best option:
- It's normally cheaper than replacement.
- There is no alternative instrument available (e.g. obsolete equipment in dedicated rigs).
Most repairs cost a fraction of the price of a new replacement unit, and our repair quotation service is free with no hidden investigation charges. All our repairs are carried out to Manufacturers Standards, using original components, or the closest modern equivalents, which we source from hundreds of suppliers worldwide.
Why not send the instrument to the Manufacturer for repair?
There are 2 reasons:
- Most OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) offer a fixed price repair, but these are normally with caveats (e.g. fixed price covers only one major fault). This is not always economical, especially for minor faults. Following investigation, we offer a tailored quotation for the repair, that takes into account the estimated repair time and cost of replacement parts.
- Manufacturers will only support equipment for a limited time, and may not repair older equipment. Some contracts require test equipment to remain serviceable for 20 years or more, support for such requirements is unlikely to be available from the OEM, as their main concern is to sell their latest product range. However, as an independent calibration and repair house, Electroservices can offer support whatever the age.
Is a tailored quote always better than a fixed price repair?
In some cases a fixed price repair is the better option for budgeting purposes and Electroservices are happy to supply quotes on request for either a fixed price repair or a custom quote.
